Kristie Matthews is a self taught artist with a crafty spirit and a passion for making replicas and faux whipped cream mug toppers. There is a sweetness to her fake food sculptures, and they are convincing lookalikes to the real thing! Designed to accessorize themed displays and holiday collections, her designs are the icing on the mug!
In 2008, she opened the Little Shop of Sugar on Etsy and started selling hand-painted plaster sugar skulls. But, not too long after, she took a break to start her family. Along the way, a love for collecting Rae Dunn pottery inspired her curiosity for whimsical faux foods and playful embellishments to top her ceramic collections. Being the perfectionist that she is, Kristie opted to create her own detail oriented “doodads.” One thing led to another, and in 2020, she began making faux whipped creams for friends. Interest for her delights, expanded from there. Now, she juggles her stay-at-home, mom of 3 role, with her budding adventures in creating eye candy sculpts. Her realistic toppers range from simple to the elaborate, and she now specializes in one of a kind, custom requests. From movie themes to JPD characters and beyond, all her designs are hand sculpted and hand painted with a distinct eye for quality. Each is so much more than a whip topper and rather a tiny art piece to marvel and showcase.
Kristie discovered JPD through collecting Rae Dunn. First, she saw Johanna’s candy corn shakers in a beautiful display which led to a quest, and it’s apparently been all down hill from there! It took a special commission piece, featuring Johanna’s masked ghost, to connect these two folk art sculptresses! Luckily, a tag on Instagram caught Johanna’s eye. Intrigued by the enchanting combo of Kristie’s photography and her ability to channel Johanna’s ghost in tiny topper form, Johanna reached out to spark a sweet collaboration!
With more and more whimsical mugs and bowls in Johanna’s portfolio of licensed ceramic designs, these collectible toppers from the Little Shop of Sugar are a special way to really “top off” a JPD collection. Look for more unique character whips along the way that blend the styles of these two imaginative artists.
