Artist Janice Lumm created Clay Doll Face in 2016, as a place to showcase and sell her handcrafted dolls. Originally, her dolls measured 18-20 inches tall and were made of polymer clay and wire armature. They were highly detailed, with handmade outfits and all. Her love of doll making was much inspired by Wendy Froud’s work, but as time progressed, Janice’s dolls became smaller and much easier to create. As most artist journeys go, she ventured into other creative interests, including illustration as a respite from years of sculpting, and this was where her idea was born! She thought… Why not apply her skills and make pins that give off a dangle doll feel!? The rest is history as her whimsical dangle pins and kitschy art prints took form and continue to capture her imagination.
As a lover of vintage Halloween, Janice was naturally inclined to make her creations with this enchanting aesthetic. In the midst of her creative journey, she first discovered Johanna’s art at the retail store, HomeGoods, and fell head over heels for Johanna’s nostalgic Halloween creations! This led to further exploration, discovering JPD Partners in Craft, and soon enough she reached out!
Intrigued by Janice’s sense of vintage whimsy, intricate details, and playful palette, Johanna asked to see more! Soon enough, they were collaborating on their first pair of JPD-inspired dangle pins featuring Johanna’s iconic black cat Jack and jolly pumpkin characters ! The results were all smiles, and Johanna was enchanted by Janice’s sweet, carnival-spirited characters that are such fun to jiggle and sport! The designs take Johanna back in time to her first Halloween folk art show when she wore a special black cat dangle necklace, that she designed for the event. Fans loved the concept, and many years later, it’s such a thrill to connect and collaborate on similar formats that simply move one to giggle in delight!
While Halloween is a favorite theme, Janice also makes seasonal dangle pins, including nutcrackers, vintage snow baby drummers, gingerbread men, and even little devil pumpkin dangles for Valentines Day! We look forward to seeing more characters that Janice & Johanna will dream up together, along the way!
