Our 10th Annual Holiday Folk Art Show!...

WOW Wow wow! A decade long history of this very special event proved to be outstanding in year 2012! For those of you who attended, I must say THANK YOU. Thank you for your enthusiasm, your sweet comments and your patience as you waited in that long snaking line that meandered through our home! We knew we would have a crowd, but you really came out in droves to show your support and love for the art I create :) There were so many of you here the first few hours that our internet signal  was intermittently blocked! Hence, our holiday tunes playlist ceased to sound and our credit card processing was a bit finicky! Oh the logistics!  After such a stellar show and packed house, we are certainly going to have to fine tune our layout and planning so that next year will be, perhaps a bit less intense, yet just as impacting and hopefully even more FUN! Although we had no flurries to speak of, the weather was sublime which allowed for ease of travel. We had a handful of collectors fly in from both our nation's coasts, and I am so honored that my fans travelled in from both near and so very far to see me, my folk art and our home. Smiles were contagious, and I was just thrilled to see all of you! Next year, I PROMISE to order even more of my reproduction ornament and decorative treasures. I thought I was all stocked up after last year's sell-out, but once again you proved me wrong! So, I am already placing orders for next year. I was delighted to see that my one of a kinds were well-received and too were flying out the door! I have just 3 originals remaining, and if you can spot them in this post below, you are welcome to inquire! For those of you who missed out on this fun show, I am going to share a variety of photos taken right before and during the event. ENJOY!  And again, thank you so very much for making this an exceptional year! I feel very blessed.

Best Wishes,
~ Johanna

Johanna-Parker-&-Originals-Display

* Welcome! That's me stopping for a few seconds at my mantel of holiday originals. As usual, there we were, JP snapping a few VERY last minute photos of me right before we opened the door at 10am. My parents were rushing around in the kitchen arranging the treats, and OH, let me just tell what a HUGE help they were to us in the days leading up!  (Thank you!) Anyway, I basically ran through the house snapping all the photos that you'll see in following. It was wishful thinking to imagine myself taking photos 24 hours in advance.... Honestly, it was more like 24 minutes in advance! I think we were actually a few minutes late to open! As folks patiently waited outside in line, we were getting ready for showtime!

Johanna-Parker-Center-display

* This table of holiday delights greeted guests as they entered. Little did I know that this arrangement would create a crowding effect. We've had a few requests to border the perimeter of the main room with displays and keep the center more open. Mom suggested placing just a tree loaded with ornaments at center. I would appreciate other suggestions as well....

Johanna-Parker-Snowman-Cups

* These are my sweet little snowman cups, offered by Primitives by Kathy...

* Shake, Shake! We had a pretty white feather tree festooned in my exclusive ornament rattles that will debut next year from Bethany Lowe Designs! I had 30 of each design, and that was clearly not enough... More are already on order, and I will sign them and offer them again next time :)

Quick Peek for the Curious...

It's less than a week away ~ GULP! I'm referring to our 10th Annual Holiday Folk Art Show & Open House. My workshop looks like a crew of elves had their way with my holiday creations, yet you and I both know that I don't have any elves! So, I can only blame myself for being such a mess-maker! It's countdown week for me, so I am only peeking in to say hello and to somewhat satisfy the curiosities of collector friends, wondering what goodies I am creating for this event. With little time to spare, I quickly snapped some images on my iPhone via Instagram. So, please excuse my quick, blurry pics. I typically shoot with my Nikon camera, playing with my lenses and such, but I honestly have no time for that right now. I am still finishing the painted details on a few one of a kinds, and with any luck, I hope to have everything complete by Monday's end so I can focus on transforming the house into a holiday shop! From one of a kind bell ornament characters, to kettle cups, sitters, candy containers, egg cups, ball guys and busts, it looks like I will have 30+ originals to offer! Of course, the rest of our house will be filled with a fun variety of my licensed reproduction designs. So, I hope you will join us. For details and the official newsletter invitation, please join my Mailing List.

Back to the workshop......

Holiday Bustle in the Workshop...

Oh my, Oh my! It's November 12th, and my heart beats pitter-patter as the calendar nears the month of December! I have been fully focused on creating my collection of one of a kind, winter delights for my 10th Annual Holiday Folk Art Show & Open House! As JP finish-sands the second round of characters from this year's collection, I am painting the first batch. Lots of snowmen, owls, mice, a few Santas and other characters round out the menagerie. I am anxious to complete these festive fellows so that I can tidy the house, decorate and prepare for the big event! Boxes of my holiday licensed designs will soon be arriving as well, so the juggling act between artist and shop & house-keeper begins. Wish me luck as I will need it. For now, I'm offering a tiny peek at what I am currently working on. This is just a snapshot of my collection. Please join me at our Open House to see all the whimsical delights! Members of my Mailing List will soon receive the official invitation.

Best Wishes,
~ Johanna

Happy Halloween!

Of course, at least here in JPD-Land, October 31st would not be complete without an appearance from Mr. Jack fashioning one of my party hats for Halloween! Fortunately, he was in good spirits when we decided to snap his photos. Honestly, the first round of pictures was a little rough, so we gave him a wee break. But, suddenly he was meowing for more! So, on went the hat and bow tie combo once again, and the camera's shutter just clicked away! I found myself laughing at the silliness of the scene and his calm demeanor. What a ham!  He is such a sucker for attention.... May these fun photos make you smile, and enjoy the additional outtakes at the end of this post!

Wishing you a very Happy Halloween! May it be purrrrrrfect...

~ Johanna, JP & JACK

* 100% genuine photo indeed. My black cat Jack is truly wearing a party hat and a bow tie to match!

Halloween-Jack

* The key to getting just the right image is to distract him a wee bit!

Halloween-Jack-crouches

* He loves pencils with erasers....... Why, I don't know!

* But, he'll wear anything for the attention! Lots of praise along with a distractor or two adds just the right magical touch!

* Ya, I know he looks thrilled doesn't he? But, he was just flattening his ears down so that I could properly place his hat!

Halloween-Jack-Lift-Chin

* And he kindly extends his chin so that I can tie the bow....

Donning-Halloween-Jack

* A little tuck tuck there to secure that hat in place...

Halloween-Jack-Hat-on

* One or two more adjustments to fine-tune the festive ensemble!

Halloween-Jack-profile

* And voila! Jack is ready!....

Happy-Halloween-Jack-&-Johanna

 * And after it was all said and done, I give him an affectionate squeeze of thanks for putting up with my silly antics! But seriously, he wanted to do it all over again!

Pumpkin Critter Carvings...

This year, JP and I grew "Giant Pumpkins" from a few seeds that a neighbor kindly shared with us! We started them in tiny peat pots, and soon they were ready for the ground. It wasn't long before the vines became an entangled maze of umbrella-like leaves, shading the emerging pumpkins below. After a few months we had some whoppers ~ 3 in total! The smallest of the 3 separated from the vine, rolled off the hill and into the path. So, it was relocated to the backyard where the squirrels tend to frolic. Of course, they saw that big pumpkin and immediately began to nibble! Before long, their little bites and gnaw marks turned into deep pits, and soon they had eaten their way through the meaty wall of that large melon. At first, the hole was small, but with each day it grew and grew until one day, the squirrels could make it through! All along, I assumed they were enjoying the flavors of the pumpkin's juicy flesh, but they were after the seeds! Was it instinct to chew and chew and find the seed prize inside, or was that a pleasant surprise? Perhaps it was a little of both! Although we've been a bit disenchanted by what these squirrels have done to our pretty pumpkin, the critter carving has captured our curiosity and offered much comic relief! I snapped a series of photos to share with all of you. ENJOY and Happy Harvest & Happy Halloween!

~ Johanna

Ghoultide Gathering 2012....

We have returned from the long road to the Ghoultide Gathering! Luckily, with no hitches along the way, we are safe and sound. And when we close our eyes, images of Halloween whimsies dance in our minds and memories swirl of reconnecting with fellow artists and friends. The experience is always bittersweet as the clock ticks by too quickly to converse and catch up with all, but nevertheless, it's a treat to unite and share our common love for Halloween. And, it's certainly a pleasure to see each artist's interpretation of this favorite holiday.

Scarecrow-Pumpkins

Gray skies, haunting winds and icy sprinkles tried to scare us away, but excited collectors were determined to wait out the weather events. A covered tent, decked out in Halloween decor and strewn with hay bails for folks to take a load off, served as a shelter for those who arrived early. A food truck along with other vendors offered warm, delicious eats and hot drinks to keep those bones from chillin'... Scott Smith's haunting jack-o'-lanterns towered over the arriving guests, perching atop stacks of hay bails and tiers of beautiful pumpkins.

Ghoultide-Entrance

* For a brief moment, Saturday's skies offered a glimpse of blue!

Inside, about 30 artists lined the walls and center isle of a lofty green barn on the Chelsea Fairgrounds in Michigan. We all set up our tables on Friday morning. The back and forth from the car to the table and all the commotion in between kept me warm under such chilly circumstances. Adrenalin was kicking in as we configured our layout, unpacked all the treasures and set each out with love and care. Then, I rushed around to peek at the other displays, snapped photos of what was in place, and we rushed off for a tiny little nap and to change into our Halloween attire.

Johanna-Parker-Design

* Johanna Parker Design ~ that's me!  Before the Friday night early buy commenced, we snapped some more photos for the 'ol memory book.

Johanna-Parker-Folk-Art

* My table included a menagerie of Halloween characters from owls and bats to mice, witches and cats!

JP-d'Andrimont-&-Johanna-Parker-Design

* And there's my handsome hero JP d'Andrimont who drove me the whole way to Michigan and back while I sat, passenger-side, working on my Trunk Show blog post (see post below) along with preparing graphics for our new high-tech check-out system. I really couldn't do this without him........

Johanna-Parker-Halloween-Collectibles

* Stuffed in our VW beetle, I brought along an old chair, vintage tins and tambourines, stools and a pair of old lamps to dress up my table and prop my collectibles....

* And there I am showing off my beak alongside the one of a kind raven base chamber vase with his bold beak too! I collected the pretty hair fancy from Mandy Yocum of Clever at Denver's Trunk Show, just one weekend before. (see post below)

Ghoultide-Shoppers

* When the doors opened, loads of people rushed in like a stampede to see the creations of Scott Smith! The rest of us jokingly waited for the dust to settle :)

Johanna-Parker-in-a-barn

* I'd like to take you on a tour of some of the creations that were offered! Below is just a sample from each artist that exhibited at this ghoulishous event! I regret that I did not snap a photo of the work of Lori Hough. She set up her eerily realistic bats and creepy animals after we left on set-up day, and we forgot to take photos later. I hope I didn't miss anyone else.... ENJOY!

Trunk Show Treasures # 7...

Just over a week ago we were scurrying around and setting up our annual Halloween Trunk Show display! JP and I awoke early, packed the final show contents into the trailer and headed over to Leo's Garage, bright and early. Nerves are always a bit heightened as set up time tends flies by. I had a medley of items to display, props to put together and a space to decorate. We always rush around like crazed kids on too much caffeine, and we're always a bit out of practice it seems! This year, Sam our show's promoter put an alarming, yet comical twist on the events by locking herself out of the garage. All of her stuff including hot coffee and keys were on the other side of the glass within the garage. Talk about a tease! JP and I were first to arrive on the frenzied seen. We calmly accepted the reality of the news, tried to contact Leo with no luck and in the meantime attempted to break in! Fortunately, no glass was broken, nor door kicked in, but between the three of us, we cleverly found our way in after about 45 minutes of trial and error! Then, it was a race to unload and set up! It makes for a funny story and a good laugh :) Of course, the adrenalin set in, and we were able to finish what we started right before noon! As usual, with only moments to spare, we snapped as many photos of the booth and vendors before the shoppers sped in to see this year's delights. Here's a peek at last Saturday's Trunk Show. ENJOY, and many thanks to ALL of my dear collector friends who saved the date and spent some time with us.....

Glass Glittered Delights...

My collection of Halloween originals for 2012 is almost complete! Oh what a good feeling! About fifty or so unique faces are all staring back at me, and anxiously awaiting to be seen at my shows. Vintage crepe paper bow ties and hand-sewn ruffled collars have all been affixed, but the very last detail adds that touch of vintage sparkle that I so enjoy! I ordered a last-minute round of both Black & Pumpkin Spice glass glitter from Meyer Imports, and I think John Meyer sensed my urgency and promptly sent them this week! I thought you might enjoy a few sneak peeks taken yesterday from my workshop. JP snapped some random pics of me adding a Pumpkin Spice glittered brim to a cat ball character that I will be taking with me to the Trunk Show. And by the way, "Dottie Waverly" will be heading off to the Ghoultide Gathering if she doesn't find the purrrfect pairing at this Saturday's show in Denver. Enjoy & happy creating!

A Tease Before Showtime...

Well, I have officially hit the frenzy season! My workshop has been a creative chaos of vintage-hued orange and black characters. Shipments of my licensed designs have been arriving in troves, so I spent the last few days signing various pieces, pricing each and safely packing them in preparation for Denver's 7th Annual Halloween Trunk Show! Amongst all the fun, this year's offerings will include my special, limited edition "Black Cat on Hat" pictured below. I was able to get a hold of 10 of these guys as only 80 were reproduced by Bethany Lowe Designs. It appears they never went public, so they are rare and a fun, signed-&-numbered catch! So, with that behind me, I am intensely focused on adding the final touches to my 2012 collection of Halloween folk art originals. I pour so much time and attention and detail into each piece that it will be a race against the clock to complete and of course, photograph each piece before my shows. Then, I have to sort them into two groups, some of which will debut at the Trunk Show while the others will be on display and available at The Ghoultide Gathering one week later! As usual, please wish me luck!

I snapped a few close-ups today of just some of the faces that have been staring back at me for weeks and weeks it seems. I look forward to finishing them as soon as possible so that I can share them with you!  Enjoy, and I hope to see you soon....

Limited-Edition-Cat-on-Hat

* Above, is a peek at my "Cat on Hat" limited licensed edition of only 80 pieces... These were produced in factory from an illustration of mine. It is fun to see one of my drawings intended for notepaper, take on 3-dimension! (I will have these available at Denver's Halloween Trunk Show)

WIP-Owls-&-Mice

* A trio of Halloween friends now have their crepe paper bow ties, but still await their glass glittered brims...

WIP-Halloween-Sitters

* A few one of a kind shelf sitters line up for final trimmings...

WIP-Halloween-Birds

* A collection of spooky birds have just received their party hats, and now I must paint their brims to complete their festive look!

WIP-Bats-&-Friends

* A sweet series of bats await a little more paint and last minute accessorizing...

I feel like I'm a fashion designer for the imaginary world of folk art characters that live in my head! Now, if I just had time to figure something festive and fun for ME to wear to this year's shows..... I'm not even there yet...eek!

Well, that's all for now! I know it's just a tease, but it's all I have time for..... If you want to see more, then please join me at one of my upcoming shows!!!

Happy Haunting,
~ Johanna

Works in Progress...

Yes, it's me, coming up for air from my workshop! Times are super busy, and I try not to look at the calendar as the reality of the date gives me both shivers and waves of heat all at once! I can imagine that my fellow Halloween & Holiday folk artist friends are feeling the same seasonal pinch. I know I should have spent the day painting, but I also know that it's fun for my collector friends to catch a glimpse at my creative process. And as the days tick by, I know I will have less and less opportunities to play. So, I am offering a preliminary peek at just some of the characters that are coming to life in my workshop. Keep in  mind, many of these fellows are still rough and will need finishing, trims, glass glitter and an occasional paper party hat to top him or her off. I have a feeling you will see less and less of me as I push through the last month to finish my collection of Halloween originals and prepare for my upcoming shows. So, Hello & Goodbye & See you soon! ENJOY.....

Art-Affect!

I often have this tendency to stamp a logo on something and turn it into a series! My days in TV news graphics left a few impressions here and there I believe ~ hehe... Well, I am starting a new feature here on my blog called "Art-Affect." Sometimes my art can inspire an artistic affect in the imaginations of others. Clearly this happened to Marsha Gruberman, a secret admirer of sorts! Last fall, she surprised with me a collection of photos that made me smile. Well, let's take a look at the first image:

Immediately, I recognized a very familiar face in her photo! On a creative whim, she carved a pumpkin into a cat, much inspired by the expressive black cat characters I create. This was her note:
"My name is Marsha. I've admired your beautiful Halloween folk art figurines, and they inspired me to carve a cat pumpkin this year. I wanted to share some of my photos of it - I hope you like it. You're work is absolutely beautiful!"

Well, thank you for sharing Marsha! Your cat pumpkin is adorable, and by the way, YOU are too! Notice Marsha's faux fur ears, cuffs, trims and her Johanna Parker Design Black Cat Tee!

MarshaG-Snow-Cat

Marsha explains that she had an unexpected ice & snow storm during that week in October when she was carving her annual pumpkin. "I did it with no power in the house and photographed it outside where snow lay on the ground with my Siberian Husky looking on in the background! LOL. I have had a passion for drawing, painting and photography for many years - so with each Fall I look forward to decorating my home for Halloween, and I try to make a unique jack-o-lantern. Last year (2011) your beautiful art work inspired me to do the cat pumpkin!"

MarshaG

Well Marsha, you did an amazing job carving this fun character by candlelight! What a fun story!

MarshaG-Happy-Halloween

It is always a joy to see that my folk art can create an Art-Affect on others. Marsha, is clearly talented, and it is fun to see her pumpkin-based rendition of a Johanna Parker black cat! I find myself so busy sculpting my papier mache that it is difficult to find the time to carve a pumpkin ~ I know, the irony right?! So, it was indeed exciting to see how one of my black cats would take shape in this seasonal medium...

If you have a project that you would like me to consider for an upcoming Art Affect feature, please EMAIL ME with your photos. I am looking for clever ways that my work has inspired others. Copycat work is not acceptable, but those of you that have added your own unique twist to a personal project, inspired from my designs, are welcome to submit.

Happy Creating!
~ Johanna

It's Rhyme Time ~ Make Your Offer!

UPDATE:  Wow, the winning offer has come in, and I am blown away by the wonderful admiration and response I received for Moonsong Moe! Many thanks to ALL the generous collectors who placed bids. I am so very grateful to you! In the end, this very special piece will soon be living with Patricia in Oregon! THANK YOU so very much for your support and love for one of a kind folk art!

I do believe it has been a couple of years since I created & offered one of my collectible Rhyme Time Originals! Unique to my line of one of a kinds, these full-figured fellows each balance atop a decorated ball and include a special rhyme that I have written to accompany the piece. "Moonsong Moe" is my first sitting bulldog, and he was certainly a labor of love with delicate details from the folds in his face to his ruffled collar and his tiny tail. Painted in a Carnival Halloween motif of cream, orange, black and vintage turquoise, he is a collector's delight throughout the year! "Moonsong Moe" is a hand-sculpted and painted folk art curio, standing at 8.5" tall, and certainly unique to the world! I welcome you to study the various images of Moe, here below, read his Rhyme Time poem, and consider placing your Best Offer!

Continue reading this post for more details...

Moonsong-Moe-&-Rhyme

"Moonsong Moe is one vocal guy,
For at night he sings up to the moonlit sky.
A harmonious howl can be heard high and low,
As the man in the moon reveals his glow.
Mesmerized by the face that lights the night,
Moe perches on his ball and sings with might.
Crescent or full matters not to Moe,
As he is under the spell of the lunar show!"
~ Johanna Parker

Crawling out of the Pages...

Even though it's still just July, I recently received a copy of Country Sampler Magazine's September issue! It's a reminder to all that fall and Halloween are just around the corner. I started flipping through the pages and came across a trio of familiar faces. The Country Treasures section on Page 12 begins with a splash of my Candlestick Spiders! What fun it is to see these whimsical characters featured, and I am grateful that Country Sampler acknowledged me as well. These eight-legged collectibles are practically crawling off the page, and if you would like to adopt a few for your home this Halloween, I would suggest visiting the various vendor sites on my Source Links Page! There are a handful of online stores carrying these curios, and I will also have them available at this year's Halloween Trunk Show. So, go find yourself a copy of this zine in preparation for the harvest season, and many thanks to the folks at Country Sampler for including me once again!

Candlestick-Spiders-pg-12

"Double, double, toil and trouble - these adorable accents by artist Johanna Parker can serve either as spider-topped finials or quirky candlesticks. Depending on your decorating mood, outfit the candleholders with grubby black tapers and spread the spiders around your tablescape, or present a united front by keeping the pieces intact."
