Spring Welcome...

Happy April 1st to all! The sun is shining and little hints of spring are emerging outdoors. More and more of our feathered friends have been appearing at our feeder as the days warm, and it's always a joy to see them return. Indoors as well, the birds are getting all the attention! In the spirit of spring, I decorated my mantel with a pair of my spring standing birds which I designed for Bethany Lowe. They are new this year, and I really love how sweet they are. The only bummer is that they sold out in January, so I am uncertain where they can be purchased, or if they can be found at this time. It seems only a handful were produced, but I have a feeling that they will be making a come back next year. So, please tell your favorite online vendor or shopkeeper that you'd like to pre-order a set so we can get more of these little tweet-hearts in production! I appreciate it and the birds do too!

Happy Spring,
~ Johanna

Halloween Tease...

It's that time of year where I often spend countless hours designing holiday products for the following year. This weekend, I am finishing up my Halloween 2011 submission for Bethany Lowe Designs. Below is just a quick peek, so you'll have to use your imagination a little bit to see the whole piece! Fingers are crossed that the buying public will like these! The second two images are a tease at a series of Halloween graphics that I just finished designing for Primitives by Kathy. And luckily, if all are accepted, those will be debuting this Fall!....
~ Johanna

Halloween-Owl
* This sweet guy will be a candy container... I can't wait to see him hollowed out and ready to be filled with treats!

Halloween-Horns
* Here are two paper mock-ups for potential Halloween tin horns. I really hope they will be able to produce these!... HONK HONK!

Howling-Cat
* A howling cat image I painted for Primitives by Kathy, to be applied to light boxes and perhaps other products.... We'll see what they come up with!

Owl-Treat-Bag
* One of four mock-up treat bag designs for Primitives by Kathy. These will be great for your kids on trick-or-treat night, and a separate mini set of these will offer a sweet party favor idea for this fall!...

And let's not forget that the 31st of this month is fast approaching. That means that EHAG's Emporium will soon be offering a spooky-fun variety of Halloween one of a kind collectibles from the talented artists of EHAG! Please visit the EHAG Emporium on Wednesday, March 31st at 9pm EST to see all the latest goodies. I will have an original Halloween piece up for adoption and if time permits, I would like to offer an additional piece here on my blog. So, stay tuned!

Meet Crowster Buttonbird...

I have fun news to share! There is a beautiful, new magazine debuting right now from the talented folks at Stampington & Company! It's called Prims, and features art inspired by a bygone era. Last fall, their managing editor contacted me and asked if I would like to submit a piece that encompassed the look of primitive elegance. Thrilled at the challenge, I said yes! What resulted was a fun character that I named Crowster Buttonbird. After he came to life, I wrote a whimsical poem depicting his personification and they published that too! I am very grateful to have my folk art and poetry included within this premier issue! . . . . . . .

Prims ~ The Art of Primitive Dolls ~ 2010

Here's a peek at my feature which can be found on the Last Page of Prims! (It's easy to find for me as I oddly flip from back to front with every magazine I pick up... Anyone else do this? ) I must say, this is a beautiful publication. There are many wonderful works of art by fellow folk artists, and each creation is lovingly presented in a way that spotlights each creator's masterwork. It reminds me of an inspirational walk through a gallery. See for yourself, and order your copy today!

"A Whimsical Rhyme of a Crowster Buttonbird" ~ a peek at the poem I wrote to describe my creative process in bringing this fun crow character to life. I was asked to write an essay that personified my standing crow, and quickly that essay began to rhyme...

Crowster-Buttonbird

Here, a photo of Crowster Buttonbird that I took before his big journey to meet the editors of Prims. I know he would look great right here at home, but I'm also considering putting him up for adoption on eBay once he returns in April. If you're interested in taking part in that auction, please email me to join my e-mailing list. I'll keep you posted on my decision! ENJOY, and go get your copy today....

Happy St. Patty's Day!

Well, did ya think I'd forget this one? HaHa, not a chance! I had a spurt of St. Patrick's day inspiration over the weekend and set to work on a mini leprechaun hat for Mr. Jack. This was serious business indeed! Of course, Jack knew I was up to trouble and sat at my feet while I wrapped various shades of green chenille, round and round my handmade hat. He always seems to know when I'm making him a new seasonal accessory! Luckily, and I mean LUCKily, he was a good sport when it came time to take his photo. He simply would have no part of the ribbon-under-the-chin combo, so I just set my silly hat on his head and he proudly posed. Cheers to all and ENJOY Jack's latest holiday fashion! Don't forget to wear your GREEN, and to leave a jolly comment here for GOOD LUCK!

Feelin' Lucky?!

Since I love the color green, and I love Halloween, I thought it would be fun to make a holiday crossover piece that incorporates St. Patrick's Day and Halloween! So, I set out a to make a black cat kettle cup, and "Lucky" here was the result.... You can click HERE for his auction link on eBay, and thank you for your kind bids!

See you at the Ghoultide Gathering!

So, the news has been out for a month, but I realized that I had not made it official here... I am truly honored to be a part of this year's 4th Annual Halloween Artist Spectacular Ghoultide Gathering! What a treat it will be to exhibit my original Halloween creations at this acclaimed event. You can visit Ghoultides's Website for a peek at the participating artists!

Ghoultide-Gathering-Logo

This very special event takes place in Northville, Michigan on October 2nd. Ghoultide Gathering is a juried show that strives to offer collectors the highest quality Halloween art in an unexpected variety of styles and mediums. I hear it's magical, the setting is charming and historic, the artists are amazing and the collectors are passionate.

I suggest you take a peek for yourself! Scott Smith, co-founder of the Ghoultide Gathering composed this short clip which offers a glimpse into last year's event. So, enjoy, mark you calendars and please join us this fall! I look forward to meeting you there :) Expect to be enchanted...........

And with this news, some of you may be wondering about my event schedule. Well, we decided to go east this year instead of west, meaning that I will not be participating in the Halloween & Vine for the first time in 6 years! It was a difficult decision to make as I love seeing Petaluma and reconnecting with my west coast collector and artist friends, but sometimes it's good to mix things up a bit, see new sites, meet new people and try something different. Perhaps some of my cherished collectors will get the itch to check out Ghoultide too! I hope so, as I would love to see your smiling faces once again.....

Something to Bark About...

I thought you may like a peek at this special order piece, finished last week. It's not often that I sculpt dogs, but I do love a whimsical black Halloween bulldog! As you can imagine, they do take hours of tedious sculpting with all of those characteristic folds, but in the end, they certainly can come to life! I only wish my fingers were able to work more quickly as I have a long list of requests from collectors, some of whom have been patient for years! However, I do hope to chip away at that list this spring, so wish me luck! (As my imagination often wanders, I am easily distracted....but I promise to try my best ! :)

Meet, "Dignified Dora, the Halloween Bulldog"...

She was adopted sight-unseen by a devoted collector, and they met today!
.... Below is a sweet quote from the email of Dora's new owner:

"SHE'S HEREEEEEEEEEEEEEE, AND I AM IN LOVE! . . . . . . . . . . .
THANK YOU SO MUCH. YOU WILL NEVER KNOW HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE YOUR KINDNESS AS WELL AS YOUR SUPERB GIFT.
" ~ Charlotte

( I just love receiving notes like that :) It's always a joy!

Tweet News!...

A package for me arrived on this fine Friday afternoon, and I anxiously tore it open to find two copies of the new March/April issue of Cooking with Paula Deen Magazine. Last year, their kind stylist asked me to send some of my spring designs from Bethany Lowe to stock pile for possible shoots. I crossed my fingers, had them sent and kept plugging away. Well, today, I began flipping each page from back to front as I always do, looking and looking for a possible glimpse of one of my creations. I almost gave up, but then decided to peek at the start of the magazine. To my surprise, there it was! In the arms of Paula Deen sits my Spring Chick glass jar tucked into a goodie-filled Easter basket! What FUN! Thanks to all the folks at CwPD magazine for once again including me in your lovely issue. I am very grateful for the recognition :)

A Labor of Love...

By now, you have probably seen and heard of PFATT's charity Penny Tree Auction! It is a lovely feather tree laden with over 30 one of kind ornaments donated by the talented artists of PFATT. This labor of love listed on eBay last night, and the participants, including myself are truly hopeful for your help! A Lovely Valentine's Day to you...

VDay-Jack-tall

What's another holiday without Jack posing in his special seasonal attire! I have been working on a few Valentine's designs for Bethany Lowe ~ one of which is a 4" ornament cone with a "Love" heart. With Jack in mind, I printed an extra one and fabricated a sort of conical necklace for him to wear. A sweet little toy mouse topped it off, and he was ready to say "cheese!"

And if you're wondering, why yes, Jack IS showing off some skin in this photo! And no, it has nothing to do with ratings. He had us quite scared for several months, so much that we needed to shave his belly for an ultrasound. Gratefully, he's out of the woods it seems, gaining weight again and full of life and good cheer! Thanks to all who sent him healing thoughts and love. With a sigh of relief, we can say they worked! Cheers to that, and may you ALL have a LOVEly Valentine's Day!

xoxo,
~ Johanna, JP & Jack

My first Halloween Bunny!...

So, with spring around the corner (thank goodness) and Halloween ALWAYS on my mind, I thought I would challenge myself with something different and fun! In my pursuit to blend the two seasons together, the following Halloween Bunny candy cup was born! I'm thinking he would make a delightful addition to your Halloween collection. I pondered over what to paint on his cup, and then it dawned on me ~ candy corn carrots! But, of course! They exist in my imagination, so let them out I thought :) This little sweetie will be listing on eBay this evening, so please check back for his official auction link. If you appreciate his quirkiness, I would appreciate your bid. Thank you for your generosity! CLICK HERE to visit his auction page...

Walking Down Memory Lane....

We all have to start somewhere, right? As it's a new year, I have been sifting through old files and transferring masses of CD images to an external drive for safe keeping. Who knows how long these thin little plasma discs will last anyway. Of course, my curiosity has slowed my progress a bit as it's always interesting to peek at the past and relive events that had an impact on life. I came across a disc titled "PA 2004." Immediately, I popped it in, and memories began to flood back of my first professional exhibition, if you could call it that! It was 6 years ago and the dawning of a new year and a new career path for myself. I had left my Art Directing job in TV News graphics for something sweeter and more creative. When 2004 rolled around, I had just learned that I was accepted into the Gallery of American Craftsmen, and the 3 day exhibit would be in Pennsylvania!.........

Johanna-&-Table-GoAC

This was my BIG break I thought to myself! The show promoters were excited about my unique "look" and wanted to feature a couple of my folk art pieces in their Preview Guide! I had no clue what this guide was nor had I seen one, but my wild visions of this market publication made me out to be a super star! Haha! So, I spent many long days and nights building a collection of originals that I would offer to the Gallery buyers at wholesale prices. I went as far as illustrating each item and creating a special price sheet for buyers to keep. We xeroxed stacks upon stacks of these papers and printed a mass of order forms. I had BIG expectations.... JP and I built a portable screen to display my hanging pieces, and I attached codes next to each item for folks to place their orders at ease.

JPD-Gallery-of-American-Craftsmen

Some of my made-to-order pieces were flat papier mache shapes with my illustrations baked into them ~ a unique look indeed that seemed to interest some while puzzling others. Alongside those, I offered a few dimensional items that I had "attempted" to sculpt, each wearing a hat adorned with my illustrations. Go figure that my "conical cat" pictured above received the most attention! I look at him now however, and think, how crude! He was lumpy and bumpy and sharp to the touch, but I was on the right track at least.......

Johanna-exhausted-GoAC

When opening preview night commenced, JP and I were ready for the rush! With clipboards and calculators in hand, we were prepared to write as many orders as we possibly could. Suddenly the doors opened, and the isles filled with a frenzy of buyers. Oddly enough, most passed us by. Surely, this couldn't be as "I" was featured in the market guide! But sure enough, they weren't looking for me.... I tried to smile and keep my chin up, but my dreams were certainly not living up to the visions I had expected. The evening dragged on and on not to mention the two full days to follow...

Johanna-display-GoAC

As inexperienced as I was, I didn't realize that the buyers would possibly want to buy my pieces right then and there. Sure, "cash & carry" was an option, but there was certainly no way I could have created trunk loads of pieces in time for this event (Plus, I'm not convinced they would have bought them anyway!!) Settling on an order-writing only booth seemed satisfactory at the time, but in reality, didn't work. I honestly felt a bit defeated by the end of the weekend as I recall writing about 6 orders in total! So much for those stacks and stacks of order forms! Makes me chuckle now, but then, it was enough to make my stomach turn.....

Like I said at the beginning of this post, we all have to start somewhere. If I had allowed this defeat to stop me, I wouldn't be here today laughing about it with you, my cherished collector friends, artist comrades, and supporters...Life is certainly a journey, and I quickly realized that my aspirations would take time and work. Six years later, I feel blessed and am so glad that I didn't throw in the towel in 2004! :) Don't give up.... try try again...... And then have a little fun walking down memory lane when the grass does become greener!

Cheers,
~ Johanna
PS: I tell this story and many others in my Artist Interview with Sally Evans.... It's a fun and hopefully inspirational listen for you to enjoy.....
