OH Bats & Celebrate365 Magazine!...

I had the pleasure of sharing some of my Halloween collections here at home in Connie Porcher's Celebrate365 Magazine! You can see a fun collage within an article of Halloween goodness around my house in her Fall 2010 issue. It just came out! From my own collection of Halloween originals, I promised to auction off a very special Bat Candy Bowl that I am pictured with in this fun publication. So, you can meet "Sweet Billy" the bat bowl and see lots more photos of him on eBay as his auction just listed tonight. Both functional and fun, you can place him on display, and he will literally hug your sweets! Fill him with candies, and expect years of giggles and grins to come as each Halloween approaches. The winner of the auction receives both the Bat and a signed copy of Celebrate365!

Cheers & Good Luck,

Collector Spotlight!...

I wanted to share another fun Collector Spotlight with you this month! Through a chain of events, my collector friend Kevin in New Jersey stumbled across my Halloween folk art collectibles, and the rest is history. Since then, he has been adding both my originals and reproductions to his growing collection of Halloween decor. Fortunately, he had a moment to share some of his own photos with us, but he admits that much more of what he has collected, including several of my originals, are still in storage. So, perhaps we'll get to see the full collection next year. Kevin recently relocated, so I'm sure it's a bit of a challenge just finding all the goodies he has been accumulating! For now, enjoy a peek at what he has on display this year along with a fun Q & A! Thank you for sharing Kevin :)

Collector-Spotlight-profile-Kevin

J: How did you learn about my Halloween folk art?
K: I bought a Scott Smith item at a gift shop and stumbled across his Halloween and Vine website, saw your collection and had to have some. When I attended H&V last year I had a whole game plan. My plan was to dart to your table fist, place my orders and then dash to Scott's & Greg's and then place an order and see what was left.

Kevin-Collection-Owl-Vase
* My original Base Chamber Vase Owl is surrounded here by two whimsical Greg Guedel carvings...

J: How long have you been collecting my originals?
K: Only about 2 or 3 years.

Kevin-Collection-curio-cabinet
* A variety of collectible Halloween folk art pieces are on display in Kevin's Craftsmen-style curio cabinet...

Kevin-Collection-Halloween
* A Johanna Parker reproduction black cat candy container, third from left resides amongst Kevin's collection atop his curio cabinet and includes an eye catching witch and JOL boy from Scott Smith and a coffin boy from Living Dead Dolls...

J: What is it about my creations that captures your imagination?
K: They are so unique, and the fact they are each hand made. I love originals!

Kevin-Collection-Halloween-containers
* Kevin proudly displays an array of candy container originals on the various shelves. The black cat and owl piece are Johanna Parker originals and Lori Rudolph of Retro Rudolph's created the devil and smiling jack-o'-lantern. The orange cat & jack combo piece up top is vintage...

J: Where have you had the best luck in acquiring my original pieces; shows, web sales, Collector's Catch, eBay, etc?
K: Web sales, and too many at H&V. (Still paying those off...haha)

Kevin-Collection-Owl-&-Skelly-Hat
* Another one of my one of a kind owl candy containers shares a spot next to a whimsical Scott Smith skelly top-hat creation.

J: Do you have a favorite piece in your private collection?
K: Hmmm, tough questions. I wouldn't part with any but I'm fond of the owl you made me.

Kevin-Collection-Standing-Owl
* Yet another one a kind owl from my studio to Kevin's house. I wonder if this is the owl he's referring to? He has quite a few!

J: Is there anything in particular you suggest I try making in the future?
K: Witches, maybe a Dracula or Frankenstein.

Kevin-Collection-Witch
* Speaking of witches, it looks like Kevin has at least one of my original witches! I believe she is a couple of years old, but looks pretty good for her age :)

Kevin-Collection-Halloween-buckets
* Back to the curio cabinet, Kevin has a trio of my Halloween buckets designed for Bethany Lowe Designs intermixed with a black cat from Greg Guedel.

Kevin-Collection-various-Halloween
*A variety of collectible Halloween folk art pieces resides on Kevin's antique buffet as well...Left to right: Johanna Parker reproduction JOL from Primitives by Kathy, Greg Guedel devil & witch, Johanna Parker reproduction black cat from Primitives by Kathy, Katherine Webber witch & Scott Smith JOL man. OH to be in such great company!!

What fun! Many thanks Kevin for allowing us to peek inside your new home to see how you decorate for the haunting season. We look forward to seeing more from you in the future, and I very much appreciate your love for my Halloween folk art as do the other artists that you represent in your collection. If I left anyone out, please let me know and I will offer you credit.

Cheers & Happy Halloween!

Back from the Ghoultide Gathering!...

We pulled into our driveway at about midnight last night after 2 long days of driving back from Northville, Michigan ~ the charming site of the Ghoultide Gathering. Luckily, the road home was an event-less stretch where the main challenge was to just keep those eyes open and alert! The road going, on the other hand, was a different story as our truck broke down in Nebraska. AAA came to the rescue, and after a few hours of slight mental meltdown, and the AC compressor plucked from the engine, we were mobile again. I was already overly tired from preparing for the show amidst the construction zone we've been living with here at home. So, you could have called it the icing on the cake, but it wasn't very sweet! Luckily however, we arrived in plenty of time to set up for our show, connect and reconnect with fellow artists and get a teeny bit of sleep before the doors opened to the Halloween fans. After our long journey, it was a pleasure just to reach our destination with time to spare. Seeing all our friends, both artists and collectors was truly the icing on the cake, and of course it all flew by so very fast that I keep replaying it in my mind as to remember all the fun we had.

We snapped as many photos as time would allow, but I always wish I had more to share. My photos below feature the fellow artists that I exhibited with in the historic church at Mill Race Village. I captured most of the displays that surrounded my table, but did not have a chance to lug my tripod over to the other 2 buildings before the show opened. Luckily, many other images are popping up in blogland, so hop around for more perspectives as I know they are out there! Let's get started......

Johanna-Parker-Ghoultide-display
* That's me, the morning of the Ghoultide Gathering looking rather sleepy. Now you know why!..... I look forward to catching up on my zzzzzzzzz's, maybe in mid December! haha......

Ghoultide-Church-building
* Luckily, the Friday before the show was a beautiful day which allowed for an easy set-up. JP snapped this photo while the various artists inside the Church at Mill Race Village set up their individual tables. Unfortunately, the weather was less agreeable on Saturday morning, so we are grateful to all the loyal and determined collectors for getting up early in their layers and rain gear to stand in a chilly, wet mist.

Ghoultide-before
* JP set up our tripod on the church balcony and captured this photo right before the doors opened.

Ghoultide-Crowd
* And here's a glimpse of the frenzy after the show began..... You can see me and JP at the back right, looking up at the camera :)

Johanna-with-portfolios
* A view from my table looking out. I brought along my 2 portfolio books for folks to skim through....

JP-d'Andrimont-Ghoultide-Gathering
* Going back in time just a tad stands JP ready to meet and greet our collector friends.

Ghoultide-William-Bezek
* The talented William Bezek won best display! Congrats Will, it was sensational!

Ghoultide-Nicol-Sayre
* And Nicol Sayre and her lovelies won one of the runner up prizes, and it's no surprise! (Laurie Hardin won the other 2nd place price, but regretfully, I have no images from the cozy room she, Scott Smith and Pam Gracia shared)

Ghoultide-Star-Rug-Company
* Maria Barton of the Star Rug Company had a table full of delights right across from us! It was fun getting to know her :)

Ghoultide-Primdolly
* This is only half of the wonderful witches and ghouls that Sheila Bentley of Primdolly Designs brought with her to Ghoultide this year! We were side by side, and it was fun to chat in person, finally, and see all the amazing characters she creates.

Ghoultide-Jerry-&-Darla-Arnold
* The intricacy and vintage appeal of Darla & Jerry Arnold's spun cotton figures were just marvelous...

Ghoultide-Lori-Ann-Corelis
* Lori Ann Corelis had a yummy-colored harvest display of her endearing mohair animals all dressed for the Halloween season....

Ghoultide-Whimsical-Whittler
* Vaughn & Stephanie Rawson, the talented duo that make up the Whimsical Whittler had a display full of enchanting creations....

Ghoultide-Paul-Gordon
* A glimpse at some of the wonderful creations from Paul Gordon certainly made us smile and set the festive mood!

Ghoultide-Irene-Gates
* A burst of color from Irene Gates and her whimsical collages greeted visitors upon entering the church...

Ghoultide-Aaron-Lowe
* Aaron Lowe had a table full of colorful and imaginative felted designs that kept catching my eye...

Ghoultide-Mill-Race-Village
* And one more peek at Mill Race Village from the day leading up to the big event. Fingers are crossed that next year brings sun and clear skies all weekend!

Again, I just wanted to give a big thanks to Scott Smith & Stephanie & Vaughn Rawson for organizing such a stellar show! The caliber of work represented was phenomenal, and I was honored to be a part of the artists exhibiting. It was a joy to reconnect with many artists and finally meet others! We shared lots of laughs and stories, and all in just a few day's time. If only we could slow down the clock and have even more opportunities to chat and ponder all the amazing talent that we are each gifted with...... You all are such an inspiration....... And speaking of inspiration, I truly cherish all the collectors who stopped by and shared your sweet compliments. Whether you adopted an original or not, I appreciate your thoughts as you inspire me to continue dreaming and creating what I do. It was wonderful to see you and meet you!

Collector Spotlight!...

YAY, the month of October is upon us, and I have invited another special Collector friend to share her collection with you! I would like to introduce you to Celeste who has a deep passion for collecting Halloween. It has been three years since we first met, and her love for one of kind creations has grown more evident with each passing season! After adopting a few of my originals, I believe she was hooked. And, she has been on the hunt for more ever since. Most recently, she made a special trip out to my Halloween Trunk show and left with several new goodies to add to her growing family of JPD originals. It's obvious she had fun arranging and decorating my Halloween characters all about her house, and fortunately, she sent me photos to share!

I admit that I lost count of how many of my originals Celeste has snagged or at times "caught!" All I can say is that when she grows tired of them, you know who to call! :) Enjoy her photos below along with a fun Q & A! And a huge thanks to you Celeste for your support and appreciation for the work I do. I am truly grateful….

Collector-Spotlight-Celeste-profile

J: How did you learn about my Halloween folk art?
C: I first saw you at Halloween and Vine three years ago and when I found your booth I had already spent all my money!! I was so sad..I brought my friend Mona over to your booth and said, look how cute these pieces are!!! Buy one, so at least I can see it at your house! So she bought "Dixie Dot"! Your web update was not long after that and I was so anxious, I was an hour early for it, I forgot about the time change!! I was able to get my first one that day, "Bailey Boo".

Celested-Cats-on-a-ball
* And, there's "Bailey Boo" above left ~ He must have told her that he wanted to be surrounded by family :)

J: How long have you been collecting my originals?
C: Three years.

Celeste-Hallowen-with-tins

J: What is it about my creations that captures your imagination?
C: I love antiques and vintage things and I feel your pieces remind me of vintage Halloween, say the 40's era. The hues you use are so rich and the expressions are so cute and whimsical, I truly love them.

Celeste-Kitchen-ball-characters

Celeste-Kitchen-hutch
* I love how she has my originals displayed in an antique kitchen hutch, mixed in with vintage tins and other relics from the past!

J: Where have you had the best luck in acquiring my original pieces; shows, web sales, Collector's Catch, eBay, etc?
C: I think I am the queen of Collector catches!!

(J: I think she's caught about 4 or 5 out of maybe 13 or so Collector's Catches so far ~ not bad! She's also had a few lucky wins on eBay and the EHAG Emporium as well as acquiring my work in person at shows.... )

Celeste-Spider-Egg-Cup
* The spider pictured above was one of her lucky eBay wins - some of you may remember him from EHAG's Black & White Challenge this past spring...

J: Do you have a favorite piece in your private collection?
C: As many of your collectors have mentioned before it is hard to choose just one!!! I am crazy over your candy cups, but I do love my big owl, "Sir Hoots a lot"! and "Bizarro", and...and...lol

Celested-egg-cups-&-bat
* A couple of those candy cups she's crazy about stand behind my silly stylized bat...

Celeste-Dog-&-Kettle-cups

* "Bizarro the Bat" is seen guarding the center of Celeste's festive mantel, lined with a fun grouping of my one of kind Halloween creations!

J: Is there anything in particular you suggest I try makingin the future?
C: I would love for you to try doing a mouse!!!

Celested-mantel-candy-conainers
* Hmmm, just a bat and 2 cats pictured here, but a Halloween mouse does sound sweet!...

Again, thank you Celeste for sharing your personal photos with us! I am honored that you find such joy in my work...

PS: Stay tuned for at least one more Collector Spotlight feature coming later this month.....

A Ghoultide Tease...

Well, I spent half of yesterday photographing my originals for this Saturday's Ghoultide Gathering! It's always helpful for me to document what I have created. I find it quite fascinating to compare my work from year to year in order to see just how much I have progressed. The funny thing is, with all the practice I have accumulated over the years, one would assume that I would be speedy fast at creating my one of a kinds by now. Ha! However, on the contrary, I keep raising the bar it seems. So, my creative process from start to finish tends to only lengthen with time! (Darn, I'm thinking....No wonder I cannot keep up with all of those special orders) Anyway, while I was photographing each piece, I pulled out my macro lens and took some fun close-ups. You'll have to use your imagination to fill in the blanks, or better yet, attend the show! For now, here is teaser featuring just a handful of the Halloween collectible originals I have created for this very special event. I hope to see you there! And let me tell you ~ my Halloween papier mache characters are anxious to meet you and perhaps just hop into your shopping bag to be swept off to your home :)

ENJOY!
~ Johanna

Owl-Tease
* Just one of the several owl-themed originals I sculpted for this event....

Bat-Kettle-Tease
* This sweet little bat kettle cup turns out to be "JP's Pick!" He begged me to keep it, but this bat was created for the Ghoultide Gathering. So, I said I'd make him a similar one, someday... hehe....

Spider-Scare-Tease
* I had fun posing various pieces together, and I really loved how this scene turned out. It reminds me of Little Miss Muffet... They are sold separately, but I think they look pretty sweet together :)

Witch-Tease
* Looking up at "Wicked Wanda"..... the one of a kind witch candy container...

Black-Cat-Tease
* Of course, I had to sneak in one of my signature black cats!

JOL-Tease
* A sweet jack-o'-lantern candy container offers a charming smile!

Bulldog-Vase-Tease
* For all you dog lovers, this guy turned out pretty neat! But, you'll have to see him in person to get the full perspective on "Spooky Sparky" ~ a double vase/candy container with secret chamber below.... Shhh, it's a secret!

Bunny-&-JOL-Kettle-Tease
* Whimsical candy corn carrots decorate this black Halloween bunny's kettle cup...

Skelly-Tease
* A pair of spooky skellies seem to scare each-other's socks off! BOO!

Best-Witches-Tease
* And a sweet witch bust finds me feeling bewitched.....

Delighted, times two...

Finally, after what seems to be countless days and months chipping away at my work, I am so delighted to reach the "finishing touches" portion of the process in creating my collection of Halloween originals for next Saturday's Ghoultide Gathering! (Wow, that was a mouthful!) I spent yesterday afternoon sewing crepe paper collars, making bow ties and adding glass glittered accents to various pieces. Admittedly, I have been nervous that I wouldn't complete what I had started. Distractions have been popping up throughout the month in every possible direction, but I am finally seeing the light at the end of the corridor. Last on the list is to photograph each original so I can remember these fun characters before they find their new homes. Well, then I have to tag, price and safely wrap them for their journey ahead, and I'm sure I'll find a million other things to do between now and then! The to-do list keeps growing while the clock ticks.....

Speaking of being delighted, I was also happy to open up my new copy of the Prims August 2010 issue by Stampinton to see that my "Delightful DoraWeen" made the Gallery! She is a sweet papier mache witch candy container that I created earlier in the year, and as usual, as a very last minute submission! Luckily she made the cut, and now I have to decide if I am willing to sell her or perhaps keep her for myself. I'll make that decision once she safely arrives back home. I will include a sneak peek below, but to read more and see all of the various artists' creations, you can order your copy of PRIMS here.

Prims-Gallery2
* A peek at page 124 reveals my "Delightful Doraween".....

* Look for this cover at the book store!
There is also a lovely tribute to the talented Penny McAllister who lost her life to leukemia earlier this year. She was a cherished member of PFATT, and the Last Page is dedicated to her and includes an image of our PFATT's Penny Feather Tree, loaded with handmade ornaments in her honor.

And, just a note: For those of you hoping to adopt one of my originals at the Ghoultide Gathering, I will be bringing my tall black cupboard hutch to house my collection. Just look for the Johanna Parker Design pumpkin logo at the top center, and if you don't see that ~ well that means, I left it at home by mistake! Let's hope I am more organized than that! OH, and I cut my hair off too! (not ALL of it, but about 6 inches at least...)

See you soon, and enjoy the Prims sneak peek as well!

A Peek at the Halloween Trunk Show...

Thanks to all who saved the date and came out to join us at Denver's 5th Annual Halloween Trunk Show! We were blessed with a beautiful day and many smiling Halloween fans. This year we had a handful of collectors fly in from out of state to adopt my one of a kind creations, so that was a treat to connect in person at the show! And of course, it was a pleasure to see so many of my local collectors who have been so very supportive of me over the years. :) For those unable to attend, here is a peek at this fun event, and I welcome you to join us next year! It took me extra long it seemed to set up my booth with all the new products I had this year. So, I only had a few minutes to spare right before the doors opened to snap a few pictures. And, I just realized that I never went out front to snap a shot of our garden vendor, and I wish I had! Obviously, I was a bit frazzled ~ typical!! Nevertheless, enjoy the images I was able to capture. And a big thank you to Leo of Leo's Automotive for offering his squeaky clean garage to us!

Saturday is fast approaching!...

Halloween-Trunk-Show2010

But, don't be too late as you'll have more Halloween delights to choose from if you come when the doors open. I have lots more Halloween reproduction products before than ever, so I have been busy sifting through all the goodies, making displays and preparing for the big day. The graphic above is a fun collage of just some of those items I will be offering. Give it a click for a closer peek! And luckily, I just finished my collection of originals for this event thank goodness!

Collector Spotlight!...

Please join me in welcoming my second guest feature for my new Collector Spotlight series! Robert Brawley, also known as "The Halloween Fanatic" has been collecting my original art and "twisting my arm" as he likes to call it, for a few years now! After he first introduced himself via email, it didn't take long for me to realize what a passion he has for the holidays, especially Halloween. Along the way, he too has delved into the arts of crafting in various clays, and you can peek at Robert's creations here. For now, enjoy the images he has taken of his private collection along with a little Q & A below!.......

Collector-Spotlight-Robert-Brawley

J: How did you learn about my Halloween folk art?
R: I found out about your work online, and originally I had special ordered an owl, then I saw your bulldog, and knew, I had to have one that looked like my dog Twinkle!

Twinkle

J: How long have you been collecting my originals?
R: Since 2008, my dog Twinkle being the first original, and after that I was hooked!

O-mouth-cat

J: What is it about my creations that captures your imagination?
R: The whimsy, graphic design, and detail that goes into each wonderful piece.

Springy-JOL

J: Where have you had the best luck in acquiring my original pieces;
shows, web sales, Collector's Catch, eBay, etc?
R: Special order originally, but then through web-sales, Collector's Catch, and at one time at Frame by Frame, a wonderful shop owned by artist Rodney Leeseberg.

Roberts-collection

J: Do you have a favorite piece in your private collection?
R: This is always a hard question because it is almost like picking your favorite child. However I think Twinkle is my favorite! I do love the pieces that my wife has picked up for me as Christmas and birthday presents too. Lily Luna, even included an original illustration of her, by you, very special!

Lily-Luna

J: Is there anything in particular you suggest I try making in the future?
R: I would love to see Johanna Parker Skeletons! I think you could make some amazing skeletons, with your talent!

Halloween-grouping

Thank you Robert for sharing your Halloween collection and spooky fun display with us! My illustrated plates on the wall (offered thru Bethany Lowe Designs) were a fun bonus to see and really make things pop! And, you were clever to request those special ooak commissions when you did as now MY plate has been a bit too full to chip away at other requests. (fingers crossed time will be more forgiving next year!) As always, I appreciate your support in my artistic endeavors and I wish you the best in yours!

~ Johanna

PS: I am anxiously awaiting more fun images from my loyal collector fans out there, so please don't hesitate to share your photos with me! I know some of you still need to decorate, so when you're ready, send them on over. I hope to showcase a few more collections before October 31st strikes! Many thanks for your support and interest in my original work :) I look forward to sharing your collections with my reader friends.

Chasing the Clock!....

Tomorrow is September!!!!! EEEK! In less than 2 weeks, I will be setting up a display of Halloween eye candy at Denver's 5th Annual Trunk Show! Some of my original pieces, destined for this show, are still standing naked, awaiting paint while others are ready for a coat of finish and their portraits taken for my personal records. I have lots yet to do, and it's only 11 days away! My parents were in town last week and over the weekend to celebrate Mom's birthday, and it was a BIG one, by the way! We had lots of fun catching up, but I was unable to set aside time to create a special piece for August's EHAG Emporium, and I apologize for that. It has been one of those busy-crazy years, so now I am trying to meet my own goals for what I hope to make and take to my 2 Halloween art shows this year. I know some of you loyal collectors travel in from many states away, and I don't want to disappoint! For those unable to attend, rest assured that I am setting aside a fun mix to offer for my October Web Sale (finally, I know!). I just haven't decided what date I will host that yet. I'm thinking somewhere between Sunday, October 10 - Wednesday October 13 would work best for my schedule. Your feedback would be appreciated, so let me know what works best for you! Thanks for checking in, and I hope to see you at an upcoming show!

Here is a sneak peek of just some of the goodies I have in store for this year's show season.....

Stocking up for the Trunk Show...

Amidst painting a slew of Halloween originals for this year's fall collection, I have been busy unpacking my latest Halloween reproductions. It's time to inspect each one, sign, price and pack them away in preparation for the 5th Annual Halloween Trunk Show, here in Denver. I thought you may want a little sneak peek at some of my goodies (produced by Bethany Lowe Designs) that have been arriving at our house! Wish me luck in getting all this done by the 2nd Saturday in September.... Lots to do, so off I go!

Halloween Archives...

It's funny the things you'll find when surfing on the web... I did a little search under "Halloween folk art" and found myself on Better Homes & Gardens website! They featured me back in their 2007 issue of Halloween Tricks & Treats Magazine, and now they have a series of 16 images and pages on their website that cover my story. Several of the photos are completely new to me, so it was interesting to finally see those. Included is a quick How-To that I shared with their readers at the time of publication. You can view the entire thing by visiting this link: Folk Art Halloween. Enjoy this 'lil flashback to the year 2007!

(Here are just a few of the images you'll see on their website.....)

My Studio in Print...

Well, it was certainly a thrill to turn to page 101 of the current Fall issue of Cloth Paper Scissors Studios Magazine today! Before my eyes, a list of my fellow Halloween artist friends rolls out, and many pages beyond reveal the studio spaces of these talented folks. I am honored to be included in the mix, and am so very pleased to see an extensive article focused on the artists of the Ghoultide Gathering event this October! A lucky 8 of us Ghoultide Gathering artists including myself, Sheila Bentley, William Bezek, Lori Ann Corelis, Vergie Lightfoot, Ed Pribyl, Debra Schoch and show promoter extraordinaire, Scott Smith are featured as artists that celebrate Halloween all year round! What fun it is to share my studio space with others and enjoy a glimpse into the spaces of my fellow artists. Many thanks to Cloth Paper Scissors Studios Magazine for spreading the word about the growing fascination and excitement for Halloween folk art. Please pick up your copy today and ENJOY! See you at Ghoultide on October 2nd!

Busy Fingers...

Never take for granted the hands that do our life's work.... It was past midnight last evening as JP snapped these candid photos of my busy fingers. Now that August is here, it's crunch time for me. So, I wheeled in a table of wire, pliers and glue and set out to make several sets of bat wings before I grew too sleepy to continue. (I know, talk about Saturday night fun!) I paid little attention to the experimental camera shots he was taking for I was deep in a crafting trance, counting out wires and forming them into sets. After I completed the steps, he shared the images he had taken - thank goodness not of me! But my hands, in artistic action, were the focus, and I was quite intrigued. I rarely grant these ten, long and skinny soldiers any credit for the work they do. But, without them, I would be lost.....

Announcing EHAG's 1st Annual Next Generation Halloween Art Contest!

Be as creative as possible and all artwork must be created solely by the young artist. We ask that no gore be depicted. Artwork will be judged based on originality and use of medium, and all mediums will be accepted. (All EHAG family members are excluded from participation.)

The artists of EHAG are obviously not the first generation to create Halloween art, and we certainly will not be the last. So, we decided to sponsor a kid's art contest that both celebrates our most favorite holiday and nurtures their creative spirit! And, as we know that there must be children out there that love both art and Halloween, why not begin to encourage them today! So, please spread the word :)

Good luck, and we look forward to seeing your creative Halloween art entries!

Collector Spotlight!...

I am introducing a fun, new series here on my blog that features my supportive collectors out there! Please join me in welcoming our first guest feature as August's Collector Spotlight..... Craig has been a loyal Halloween fan for several years now, and he has graciously offered a peek at his Johanna Parker one of a kind collection at Halloween-time. You can read along at our Q & A, and enjoy the eye candy as you go!

Collector-Spotlight-profile

J: How did you learn about my Halloween folk art?
C: I first came across your work at my first visit to Halloween and Vine about 4 years ago. So I guess you could say that I just stumbled across your work, although in hind site I had already purchased one of your cat bowls online to use at my veterinary hospital to hold candy at halloween. At that time I did not know you had any other pieces or original art work as well.

Craig-Mantel-full

J: How long have you been collecting my originals?
C: Since I met you 4 years ago at Halloween and Vine.

Craig-Mantel-left

J: What is it about my creations that captures your imagination?
C: I love vintage folk art Halloween images. I'm especially drawn to paper mache artwork. The color palates are perfect for that era along with the detail image work on the Halloween hats and the container bases. I also am drawn to your work because you incorporate animals such as bats, cats and more recently even dogs! The expressions on the faces are always fun and cheerful.

Craig-Mantel-center

J: Where have you had the best luck in acquiring my original pieces;
shows, web sales, Collector's Catch, eBay, etc?
C: I have aquired most of your pieces at Halloween and Vine and some that you have offered online. I don't know what I'm going to do this year since you won't be at Hand V :(

Craig-Mantel-crow

J: I know, I won't be at H&V this year, but I will be exhibiting at the Ghoultide Gathering in October. It's a must see event with a fabulous Halloween artist line-up! I have a hunch you'd like it :)

Craig-Mantel-Owl

J: Do you have a favorite piece in your private collection?
C: I love them all but I really like the squatty bat with the spread out wings.

Craig-Mantel-Bat

(I think this is the squatty bat he is referring to, or it could be the one pictured below.......)

Craig-Mantel-right

J: Is there anything in particular you suggest I try making in the future?
C: Would love to see more dogs! I think some skeletons or zombies would be great too if you wanted to go down the creepy road.

Thank you Craig for sharing your unique Halloween collection and spooktacular display with us! It's always a pleasure for me to see my creations so thoughtfully displayed in their new surroundings.....

~ Johanna

PS: I know there are many more of you loyal collector fans out there, so please don't hesitate to share your photos with me! Perhaps you will be my next Collector Spotlight! Many thanks for your support and interest in my original work :)

New Hats in the works!...

For the past 7 years I have designed at least one new illustrated paper hat for my Halloween folk art originals to wear. When I release my fall collection of one of a kinds, you will see the hats appearing in a variety of sizes and worn on the heads of a select few of my characters. I am a little slow at completing my hats this year, but luckily I have just finished a batch! You can take a peek at what I have so far! Adding my signature hats is a fun way for me to share my love for illustrating with my fondness for papier mache. It's a mixed media approach to my art that completes the package and gives the work one extra step of uniqueness. ENJOY and keep an eye for the various characters who will be sporting these hats soon!
