Back to the Drawing Board....

February is that time of year for me to pull out the 'ol sketch pad, pencils & erasers, and then the ink pens and crisp illustration board naturally follow. It has certainly been a while since I have spent days upon days at my drafting table, drawing fun characters for future products, and I must admit that I am thoroughly enjoying it. I was a little nervous that I would forget how, but luckily, the whimsical ideas are flowing well. Sure, at this stage, the drawings aren't perfect, but I have learned to "breathe through" the lines as my pen touches the board and to allow my breath to help keep the lines flowing and smooth. At the end of the day, my right hand feels a bit stiff, so a little yoga here and there is helping keep the balance. If only I could keep to this nice relaxing pace for the rest of the year.... haha! I will enjoy it while it lasts though and draw as much as I can now before I must revisit the workshop to sculpt and sculpt some more!

Dancing-black-cat-drawing
* I dreamt up this fun dancing black cat illustration the other day when imagining characters for wearable products, such as Tees and totes. JP and I had a brainstorming session, and decided to open a Zazzle Shop where I can offer my drawings, photographs and such on clothing, bags, greeting cards and more! It's not open just yet, but I'm working on some fun ideas that I promise to make available to you! So, stay tuned. And while I'm at it, why not put this cutie-pie cat on notepads and charms...

Johanna-drawing
It was late the other night when JP snapped a few candids of me while I shooed him away. I just loaded the photos today and decided to share a few after all. As many of you know, I LOVE incorporating owls into my designs. They have such fun character and texture, so this particular illustration has been a fun play on stylization. It's certainly taking its time to evolve, but I have a feeling it will be a hoot! As you can see, I like to wait till the end to add the eyes, partially because I hesitate out of fear to add them, but also because they truly bring the character to life.

Owl-drawing-zoom
* Eventually I will paint this owl, but for now I need to "commit" to the eyes and finish the whimsical chandelier-style branch that surrounds him. He will be quite stylin' on a shirt or bag or card or or or....... We'll see!

Profile-Johanna-drawing
* Another candid of me busy at work on my stylized owl. Off in the distance are recent sketches for Halloween box containers that have been approved by Bethany Lowe Designs for 2012 production. Now, I just have to illustrate those graphics too! The to-do list is growing!!!!

Cat-pail-drawing
* Another black cat candy pail image that I am almost finished with has been staring at me for days. The shading and highlights are created by a series of dots or lack there of. I find myself using stippling in both my illustrations and on my painted folk art pieces. I know it sounds odd, but I love dots! This drawing is slated for a Primitives by Kathy notepad and perhaps some Zazzle products as well.

Cat-&-Jol-drawing
* Here, another notepad design is in the works. Of course, a splash of orange in various hues will bring this image to life!

Snowmen-drawing
* And while I'm at it, some whimsical snowmen and Santa-themed notepad designs are taking shape was well. My due date for these various designs is fast approaching next week, so I really should step away from the computer and go back to the drawing board! I hope you enjoyed the little peek from within my studio...

Happy creating,
~ Johanna

New Year's Escort in Style.....

I had a silly vision this morning that Jack would lead us all into the New Year! After all, he does have quite the reputation for celebrating the holidays in style. So, I stripped the mailbox of its rather garish silver garland and brought it in for Jack to sniff. With a little persuasion, he was soon fashioning this shiny stole and leash combo, and I was begging JP to play along. Luckily, all went well and my silly vision began to take shape. And, Voila ~ HAPPY NEW YEAR to YOU! I wish you and yours the best that 2011 has to offer. May it be filled with magic, shimmer and delight!

xoxo,

Christmas Gallery Update!...

It has been ages since I have spent the time to update my Christmas Folk Art Gallery! With show season winding down, I have finally had a moment to sift through some current images of my work from this season to share with you. This year flew by much too quickly for me, so my collection of holiday one of kinds was smaller this time around. But, here is a peek at a few of the fun characters that I was able to create. Below is a tease of a few originals featured in my Gallery. You can always find a link to my various Folk Art Galleries by clicking on the text links on the top right-side column of this blog. You will then be redirected to my Website. Items featured in my Gallery have all found loving homes, but if you are interested in adopting a holiday original from me, please send me an email to join my e-mailing list for updates!

A 'lil Silliness for you!...

It's been a balmy December so far, so JP and I decided to strike a silly pose out in the cone zone! Of course, I had the bright idea of topping our heads with the decorated safety cones I had on the steps to greet the guests at our open house. And voila, within moments, a silly idea turns into a silly photo to mark a busy-crazy year! Enjoy and may you have a silly-fun holiday filled with smiles and cheer...

A Cone Zone Christmas!...

I feel so very fortunate as we were blessed with nice weather this past weekend while we hosted our 8th Annual Holiday Folk Art Show and Open House! We had a record number of guests who stopped by to spread smiles and collect special goodies for the gift-giving season. A big THANKS goes out to all that came out from both near and even states away to join us! We enjoyed visiting with you and were pleased that you enjoyed your visit! So, I know you're waiting to see the latest photos from this year's festivities, so here goes!

Cone-Zone-House-front
* I wasn't kidding about the "Cone Zone Christmas" which I appropriately coined for this year's event! We started MAJOR construction in September, had gaping holes on 3 sides of our home to work on our foundation and expanded sub-ground living spaces. For those of you who have been to our home in the past, there was an apparent change to the appearance of our front yard. It's certainly no where complete, but with a little imagination, I think many of you were able to see the dream in motion.....

Cone-Zone-Christmas
* I took the Cone Zone Christmas one step further into Johannaland, and whimsified them just a touch with shiny aluminum tree branches and vintage baubles! It was a play on words that materialized unexpectedly :)

Front-Tree-Snowman
* Our new front porch vestibule addition is still just in our minds, so a temporary plywood porch greeted guests. I dressed it up with an old sled, the tree topper of that vintage aluminum tree and one of my latest snowmen figures from Primitives by Kathy.....

Front-Table
* Upon entering, guests were greeted with this fun center display of eye candy! As usual, with my endless list of to-dos, I didn't have a moment to snap any photos until about an hour before the event started. It was as rush-rush frenzy indoors while shoppers started to arrive early outside.

Holiday-Products
* A closer peek reveals my love for vintage style. My reproduction Santas and snowmen collectibles happily mingle amongst old antique finds...

Johanna-Home-Show
* Quick! I strike a pose between shooting the various displays! I look calm, but trust me, I was breaking a sweat in that fuzzy sweater, living up to its name :)

Snowmen-Lollipops
* A quick 180 behind me reveals a close up of my whimsical lollipop snowmen!
One shopper said they were "creepy cool"... Guess a little of my Halloween side tends to reveal itself in other holiday creations of mine!

Holiday-Mantel
* A quick pan to my left and you see my mantel strewn with the remainder of my one of a kind holiday originals for this season. I only wish I had made more for a web sale this year, but with our construction and busy scheduling, it has been difficult to find more time to devote to these labor intensive pieces. I promise next year to spend more time on a holiday collection of one of a kinds!

Merry-Be-Cat
* Here's a peek at "Miss Merry Be," an original winter kitty who found a home this past Saturday!...

Snowmen-originals
* Two more delightful snowmen originals with arms open wide, also found homes!

Wide-backside-of-front
* Looking toward the front door, you see the backside of my entrance table filled with a variety of holiday goodies! Let's take a closer look.....

Mom's-Snowmen
* A grouping of "sock snowmen" designed by my mother, Kathy Parker for Primitives by Kathy were a big hit! Cute!

Backside-front-table
* Festive ornaments dangle while Santas and snowmen stay firmly clipped to a lovely white feather tree. A sleigh filled with pre-packaged snowmen ornaments ready to give as gifts was quickly emptied once the shoppers arrived....

Front-Room-Wide
* Here's a wide shot of the main room. Off to the left is the passage to our kitchen which I unfortunately ran out of time to shoot! Next year, I MUST be more organized! Better yet, join my mailing list for the official invite and see if for yourself next year!

Charming-Snowmen
* Let's take a closer peek at my front display where the armature from an old lamp shade makes for the perfect display for my latest charm necklaces, offered by Primitives by Kathy...

Wish-Charm
* It's time to make a WISH!

Snowmen-Group
* Remember that large snowman on our front porch? Well, he has a mini-me snowman companion! heheh!

Spring-Corner
* I always have some great year-end close-out sales at our Open House! Here's my corner of Spring delights, and even with the chill in the air, the pastel birds were flying the coop!

Sing-Charms
* Speaking of birds, my sweet "SING" charm was a fun find along with the Penny Rug charm necklace and others. I grabbed an old plant stand and some clothespins to soon find that I had a fun way to display these wearable art pieces...

Vintage-Tree-on-Deca
* One of the first pieces you notice when you enter our home is this lovely hand-crafted cabinet that JP made for me YEARS ago to house my art supplies. It's more of a catch-all piece now, but certainly has not lost its luster! This year, I topped it with a vintage Christmas tree from my mom's childhood, passed down to me. I grew up decorating this tree in my bedroom each year, and now it's our family tree! (it has also made for a great prop at my local shows!)

Cozy-Scarf-Snowmen
* Ahh, I spot one more set of these fun characters standing next to that magical tree!

Halloween-Shelf
* And what's not Christmas without a little Halloween! Well, that's how I roll at least :) Enter my studio room to see a grand display of year-end Halloween delights, all marked down for our shoppers!

Halloween-Display
* I cordon off half of this workspace and devote it to Halloween each year. It goes through quite the transformation in just a few hours time. Hmm, who's that in the window?

Halloween-Table
* Well, if it isn't Mr. Jack, the black cat, watching the birds from his favorite roost! In the foreground, crescent moons, owls and jack-o'-lanterns play well with the black cat king himself....

First-Shoppers-enter
* The clock was ticking... one minute till, and JP and I were running around finishing the last possible details, lighting candles and preparing for our guests! I quickly grabbed a pile of box trays to hand to our shoppers as they arrived..... WELCOME!

Shoppers-enter
* We were greeted with smile after smile which made all the effort so worthwhile!

Shoppers
* Guess those box trays came in handy as folks collected ornaments and other delights to fill their homes with!

Johanna-&-Jack
* At the end of the day, Jack and I posed for a happy pic, as we reminisced over a lovely day filled with countless hugs, laughter and smiles! I appreciate that so many of you saved the date and joined us for our 8th Annual Event! Next year will be the big 9, so please mark your calendars for the first weekend in December, 2011 and join us once again! You won't regret it :)

Cheers & Happy Holidays,
~ Johanna

Gone Batty!...

OK, so I've been hoarding this original bat! For months, he sat unfinished in my studio, anxious for a coat of paint and layers of detail to bring him to life. But, I did not get around to finishing him in time for my fall events, nor Halloween! However, a little nudge from my EHAG friends in the Emporium was just the right amount to inspire me to finish him in time for November's opening. Meet "Wally Wingster" a unique one of a kind collectible bat, complete with hand-formed stylized wings and a series of flapping bats that encircle his spherical base. Take a peek below for a few images of Wally, and decide for yourself if you would like to invite Wally into your home, or perhaps give him as a cherished gift this season to a special friend. Farewell to the Gifts for Yule....

The 13th Annual Gifts for Yule was certainly bittersweet for all of its vendors and attendees this past weekend. We set up booth on Saturday morning knowing that this was the last show in a sweet tradition for Denver that lasted over a decade. Sam Robinson's vision for a vintage-inspired holiday fair grew into a wonderful event that so many of us looked forward to each November. I especially loved the unique blend of artisans and antique dealers that she included in this show as it was quite evident that we all shared a passion for nostalgia and the like. But with all things, nothing is permanent in life, and when the beautiful Phipps Tennis Pavilion sold to a private owner, the decision was made to bring this event to an end. We will always remember the merriment in the air, the sparkling eyes of excited shoppers, our vending friends that we anticipated reconnecting with and on and on. Thank you Sam for yet another memorable show and a history of enchanting events that none of us will ever forget. I was proud to be a part of this unique group of exhibitors that all had a passion for vintage holiday delights!

Included below is a collage of images we took right before the doors opened. With the glass ceiling and sunlight streaming in overhead, it is always a challenge to capture photos in the pavilion, especially when we have only minutes to spare. Regardless, I hope you enjoy!

Holiday How-To for You...

The quick transition from Halloween to Christmas always catches me by surprise! Once November 1st hits, I have to kick it into high gear and switch from grinning jack-o'-lanterns to whimsical snowmen. With a holiday show in less than 2 weeks, I am certainly feeling the heat, or maybe I should call it the chill! And now that I have changed my seasonal focus, I find it most appropriate to share a couple of fun holiday How-To projects with you! The 2010 issue of Better Homes & Gardens Holiday Crafts Magazine features a pair of my snow-folk ornaments along with my instructions to create them! Included is a fun clown-like lollipop of mine and a ring-a-ling-ding snow-girl, both designed to hang from your holiday tree. I suggest you find a copy today as it's full of wonderful projects from both myself and many of my fellow crafty friends! Happy creating!

Was it a Halloween Dream?...

Wheewww, we just returned from a whimsical weekend in Washington where the mood was all things Halloween! For weeks upon weeks, mom was preparing for our visit and decking the house in orange and black delights. Everything smelled of spicy-sweet Witch's Brew, and yummy treats made from the Parker cauldron were ready to be served. Naturally, we put on our festive Halloween attire to celebrate the season...

Mom-&-Me

The spellbinding aroma of sugary delights filled the air. Chocolate bonbons, orange bark candy, iced cookies, ginger bars and Halloween cupcakes lured me in to take a bite....

Halloween-Cupcakes

Soon, I was under a Halloween spell and the Hobgoblin himself arrived to start the party. Bells began to jingle and the wild dancing began.....

Dancing-Spook

Guests began to arrive, and all to celebrate my most favorite holiday with me!

Spook-in-the-door

Then, the Pumpkin-Patch King, dressed as a scarecrow, knocked on the door, and I let him in too....

Three-of-us

Preparing for the party, he and the Hobgoblin smoothed my hair and the Pumpkin-Patch King secured my party hat with a bow beneath my chin...

Getting-dressed

We laughed and shared stories of Halloweens past. Giddy with treats and overjoyed to be together, the day swept by, and soon I was waking up. Was it a dream??

On the following morning, I asked my parents if we could go to the Pumpkin King's Patch, and so we headed down a winding fall road to visit his farm. Whimsy once again filled the air with smiles and silliness all about...

Craven's-Farm

He had grown pumpkins of many colors and shapes, bumpy and smooth, mini to massive and all in between...

Craven's-pumpkins

We visited the barn to meet the critters within. JP had a close encounter with a loud squawking goose and what looks to be a bright, dashing spirit which revealed itself within our lens!... Spooooky!

Spirits-on-the-farm

I posed with the pumpkins, and felt a wee bit nostalgic remembering those childhood days out at the pumpkin patch! What fun!.....

Johanna-in-the-patch

It was certainly a weekend not to forget, but it all flew by in such a frenzied blur! Was it a dream... ? No, I think it certainly did happen and what fun we all had.... I hope to reveal more of this whimsical weekend down the road, so stay tuned. For now, allow your imagination to soar! Happy Halloween!

Just a Few Halloween Sets Left!...

Many thanks to all of you who popped in at the start of my Halloween Web Sale last night and adopted a special collectible piece for yourself! I appreciate your determination and your patience ~ I know some of you had trouble getting my Folk Art Originals page to load, including me! Sorry! I'll look into that for next time as I'm suspecting there was too much traffic hitting all at once. I feel so very fortunate that your interest in my one of a kinds continues to grow, and of course, I wish I could accommodate everyone's request. The good news is that my love for Halloween is a year-round passion. So, expect to see more from me after the holidays settle. :)

I do however have a few Halloween Reproduction Collector's Sets still available! If you love Black Cats or Owls & Bats, I may just have the set for you! Each item is signed by me, and I'll include an extra goodie in your box. Please contact me soon if you are interested in a set as I only have a few remaining.

Thank you so much for your support & Happy Halloween!
